We all know that sprinkling fruit with lemon juice it stops them turning brown, so how would you feel if we told you the equivalent of lemon juice for the body was glutathione?
Glutathione is often described as the body’s master antioxidant – offering potential protection from free radicals, which cause oxidative damage, otherwise known as aging of our cells.
So can it really help pigmentation and psoriasis?
There is research being carried out to see if it could be effective treatment of pigmentation and psoriasis. Pigmentation is a disorder that affects the colouring of the skin; skin tone appears uneven, and patches of skin are darker than the surrounding areas.
According to Medscape, 0.5% to 2% of people worldwide suffer from the disorder. While, psoriasis is a condition that causes small patches of dry, red and scaly skin and affects 125 million people worldwide, according to psoriasis.org.
Pigmentation is caused by melanin, and studies being carried out, have seen there could be a link between glutathione and the reduction in melanin in the skin.
It’s said to work by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase; the enzyme catalyses the making of melanin. By inhibiting the enzyme, the skin no longer produces pigmentation.
In a scientific review in The Clinical Review of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, glutathione was also shown to decrease psoriasis.
The conventional treatments of pigmentation and psoriasis are topical treatments and more research is needed to understand if glutathione could heal and then be used as a preventative measure.
There is also a lot talk around other antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin D helping these conditions. A review in the National Library of Medicines revealed a vitamin D deficiency could lead to various conditions, including skin pigmentation. However, more scientific proof is needed to further investigate it’s use.
REVIV Plus clinics can offer vitamin D blood tests after consultation with a doctor who could look into a possible deficiency. Also, dependent on a consultation with a REVIV doctor, you may be prescribed an IV therapy with antioxidants and vitamins.
